Audio Production

I have been running a professional recording studio since 1996 and have had projects released commercially,  internationally and broadcast on RNZ Concert. My focus now is on location recording of orchestras, choirs and chamber music ensembles as well as music and soundscape creation for film, web and live performance.

In the studio, which is acoustically treated, my setup is based around a UAD Apollo interface with Focusrite ISA preamps going into Logic Pro on a Mac. Monitoring consists of Neumann KH80DSP monitors and Beyer D770, D880 and D900 headphones controlled by a Audient Nero monitor controller. Plug-ins include UAD and SSL emulations of vintage gear.

Microphones include, Microtech Geffel UMT 70S, Sennheiser MKH8020 (2), MKH8040 (2), MKH8050 (2), Beyer MC740N, M201 (2), AEA N8 Ribbon (2) and Shure SM7. Location recording is largely undertaken with a Sound Devices MixPre-10, an 8-channel portable recorder with ultra low-noise Kashmir preamps. Monitoring as per above.

Instruments include Pilgrim Clarsach harp, Dennis Crowley uilleann pipes, Terry McGee Irish flutes, whistles, Taylor acoustic guitar, bodhran, and taonga pūoro for kaupapa Māori projects. Synthesisers include Moog Subsequent 25, Moog Mother 32 (x2) and Waldorf Rocket. Software instruments include Spitfire BBC Symphony Orchestra.
